What’s so special about the Pumpkin Patch?
Before buying or adopting a Chinchilla, it is very important to do your research. Although my family and myself ADORE Chinchillas, they are not the pet for everyone. Check out our Link Section to find informative articles on Chinchillas so you can make an informed decision BEFORE you add one to your family.
Before contacting us about a particular Chinchilla please be sure to read this section.
Food For Thought:
Some of the wonderful things about Chinchillas!
- Chinchillas have no odor, and are very clean compared to many other rodent pets
- Due to their dense fur, it is rare to have allergies to a Chinchilla
- From a teachers point of view, they are a fantasic classroom pet to teach about Humane Eduation. They also have such an unusual history, kids love to learn about the geography and habits of these amazing animals
- They are just so darn cute!!!!
- They have a long life span, so they will be with you for many years if cared for correctly
- They are funny, lovable, and once again……….they are so darn cute!!!!!!
Some important things to think about:
- Chinchillas require additional care and expense compared to many other small animals. Aside from quality food and bedding, frequent dust baths are essential to their health.
- Vet care can be expensive, and exotic animal vets are not always easy to locate.
- Chinchillas have many different personalities. Some do not care to be held, and tend to be nervous around humans, even their owners. Could you still love your Chinchilla if it ended up with a challenging personality? Pets like children are a lifelong commitment.
- Chinchillas can be seen as prey to some kinds of other pets such as dogs. Can you keep your Chinchilla safe?
- Can you provide air conditioning and very good ventilation for your Chinchilla? Chinchillas can not take warm temperatures. Over-heating can easily result in death.
- Can you provide you Chinchilla with a large cage with plenty of room to jump and play?
What to expect when you bring your Chinchilla home?
It is very stressful for a Chinchilla to change environments. Almost ALL Chinchillas will be nervous and stressed out in their new home. It is very important to understand this before you bring your Chinchilla home. This DOES NOT mean your Chinchilla doesn’t like you, or doesn’t like it’s new home, it just needs an adjustment period. Be kind and patient and you will be rewarded with a friend for life!
What if I have questions?
Unlike the big pet stores, we are always here to offer support and suggestions. Our goal is to make you love Chinchillas as much as we do, and that is A LOT!!!!!!! It is also our goal to make sure the Chinchilla receives the best care and home possible.
